The provincial committee member for gender in Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), Shiela Chisirimunhu says government must take measures to transfer rural female teachers to schools that are close to their spouses as a survey has revealed that some marriages are breaking down.
“We would like to appeal to the ministry of primary and secondary education to formulate measures that will see female teachers who are working in rural schools being transferred to areas near their families.”
“A survey we have carried as ARTUZ has revealed that some marriages are breaking down. You can’t imagine a situation where a female teacher is working at a rural school in Gokwe and her spouse is in Masvingo province…..we feel that it’s high time this issue is redressed, “she said.
Chisirimunhu added:
“We have had an increase of promiscuity among families as a result of this anomaly.”
Teachers organizations have for a long time been advocating that government address the matter.Meanwhile, Chisirimunhu will be competing for a national vice-president post in elections that will be done virtually on 15 August.
