Members of the public have taken heed of campaigns being spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Child welfare that are aimed at getting everybody vaccinated against the Cholera pandemic. A nationwide massive campaign is being done in order to have people getting vaccinated against Cholera. With the recent increase in Cholera cases in the region, members of the public have taken it upon themselves to make sure that they raise this awareness campaign to a higher level so as to ensure a healthier future for the community.
Cholera, a highly contagious waterborne disease, has become one of the most dreadful diseases in the country and in particular, a persistent health challenge. Research has shown that the disease is caused by the bacterium Vibrio and spreads primarily through contaminated water or food.
Severe cases of attack from this disease need rapid treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics. Provision of safe water, basic sanitation and hygiene practices is critical in preventing and controlling the transmission of Cholera. This is happening at a time when the local health authorities have tried their level best to contain the outbreak and protect the public.
In Masvingo the Cholera pandemic is causing social unrest to the majority of the people in Chiredzi, Bikita as well as Chivi districts. These have been identified as major hotspots in the province.
