The National AIDS Council (NAC) in Zimbabwe has taken significant strides in supporting vulnerable children through the DREAMS initiative, a program aimed at reducing HIV infections among adolescent girls and women. The initiative is making a notable impact in schools such as Nyikavanhu in Masvingo District, Nikita Mangena in Mwenezi District, Hlanganani and Chibwedziva High Schools in Chiredzi South.
The DREAMS initiative, which stands for Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe, provides comprehensive support to students focusing on education, health and empowerment. The program’s implementation in these schools has been met with positive feedback from educators and community members in particular.
Teacher responsible for mentoring of these programs at Hlanganani High School, Linda Matsilele confirmed a remarkable improvement in students’ engagement and academic performance.
“The DREAMS initiative has not only provided essential resources but also instilled a sense of hope and determination in our students,” said Matsilele.
She added, “We are witnessing a transformation in their attitudes towards education and their future.”
At Chibwedziva High School, Deputy Headmaster Benjamin Machwaire highlighted the program’s role in fostering a supportive environment for students.
“The mentorship and life skills training offered through DREAMS have been invaluable. Our students are more confident and better equipped to make informed decisions about their health and education,” he remarked.
Dorothy Sibanda, a parent-child community facilitator at Nikita Mangena High in Mwenezi, emphasized the importance of community involvement in the program’s success.
“DREAMS has brought our community together, creating a network of support for our children. We are grateful for the opportunities it provides and the positive impact it has brought on our families,” she said.
The NAC’s efforts through the DREAMS initiative continue to empower young women and girls, providing them with the tools and support needed to lead healthy, productive lives. As the program expands, it promises to bring lasting change to communities across Zimbabwe.
