The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe regional manager for Masvingo province, Ndumiso Mgutshini says a steep increase of prices of school uniforms has exacerbated a huge increase of the consumer monthly basket which has now risen to over $73 000.
Mgutshini told Hevoi FM News that the hike of school uniform costs contributed to a rise in the monthly consumer basket by over 25 percent.
“There has been a sharp rise in school uniforms prices and this has resulted in the ballooning of the consumer basket,”said Mgutshini.
He added that most parents will find it difficult to pay for boarding school fees.
“The recent increment in school fees is beyond the reach of many parents. From a survey we carried, most boarding schools are charging over $50 000 per term while day scholars will have to pay not less than $5 000 so what it means is that is going be gloomy for most parents,”said Mgutshini.
A survey carried by Hevoi FM News revealed that some boarding schools in the province have increased school fees to as much as $60 000 while some private boarding schools are charging to as high as $120 000 per term.
