Motorists in Masvingo are totally disgruntled over the magnitude of corruption that they allege to be sweeping across the Vehicle Inspectorate Department, (VID).Those who relayed their grievances to this reporter indicated that VID officials are engaging themselves in unethical practices involving extortion and fraudulent activities that are now prevalent in this department.
One of the motorists, Jimmy Muderekeshe, raised that this was total abuse of power aimed at personal gain. “This is very bad. The organ has lost its mandate. It is now composed of people who don`t care about preserving human life. All that matters to them is filling their bellies. How can you allow a vehicle that is not roadworthy to keep on using the road? That`s very unprofessional.” Said Muderekeshe.
“We are often subjected to unnecessary delays, unreasonable demands, bribes and exorbitant charges for minor infractions. We are now calling for urgent action to curb corruption within the VID. Where is the Anti-Corruption Commission? Investigations should be done with immediate effect.” Said one motorist who identified himself as Rumbidzai Masenga.
Meanwhile, Passengers` Association of Zimbabwe, President, Tafadzwa Goliati, encourages passengers to desist from using unregistered vehicles saying that this will go a long way to curb road accidents.
