Chief Ndanga has called on government to take stiff measures against churches that allow child marriages following reports that such practice was on the increase in the country.
“There must be an enforcement of the law over religious churches that allow young girls as young as 12 years old to marry,” Chief Ndanga told Hevoi FM News.
“According to our constitution it is prohibited for someone to marry underage children.We are arguing the community to report all cases of child marriages in our community to either to traditional leaders or to the law enforcement agents,”said Chief Ndanga.
According to the latest report compiled by UNICEF, child marriages are on the increase in the country. Child marriage – marriage before the age of 18 – is a human rights violation. Despite laws against it, the harmful practice remains widespread in some countries around the world.
