The Forestry Commission in Masvingo Province, in partnership with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), has confiscated 20 tonnes of charcoal and arrested 20 people during a crackdown on illegal charcoal trading and firewood transportation.
The blitz, which ran from 12 July to 26 July 2026, targeted charcoal producers, firewood users and transporters operating in rural areas, urban centres and along major highways across the province.
Forestry Commission Provincial Head Edwin Machokoto told Hevoi FM News that the operation was conducted in collaboration with law enforcement agencies as authorities move to curb illegal tree cutting and protect forest resources.
Machokoto said illegal charcoal activities were recorded in areas including Rutenga, Masvingo Urban and Chiredzi town, with those arrested being charged for violating forestry regulations.
He urged individuals who wish to engage in charcoal and firewood trading to approach Forestry Commission offices or relevant authorities for guidance and to obtain the necessary approvals.
The Forestry Commission said it will continue working with law enforcement agencies to promote sustainable use of forest resources and combat environmental degradation in Masvingo Province.
