Farmers in Masvingo province say government must give them food aid as they are facing a drought.
Farmers told Hevoi FM Newsthat their maize harvest is now a write off, following a prolonged dry spell.
“We are appealing for government assistance as our maize crop is now moisture stressed.We are facing a drought and we are appealing that government avail food aid as soon as possible,”said a headman in Gwangavi area under Chief Charumbira.
Another villager from Zano communal area under Chief Murinye said:
“The farming season was promising as we had good rains in January but now we are facing a drought….we will need food assistance.”
An Agritex officer in Chivi district who declined to be named said most farmers in the area are facing a drought.
“Villagers are facing a drought as we last had some rains in February.That means government will have to provide food assistance,”he said.
For the past month, no meaningful rains fell in Masvingo province.
