Gutu villagers in ward 25 under Chief Makore have bemoaned selective assistance in food hampers by donors that everyone was starving in their area as they did not harvest well last season.
The villagers who most of them were young women selling tomatoes by the road side told Hevoi Fm news that, most of the people government was assisting were those already receiving their pensions while unemployed youths were starving.
“The government assist those who are already getting pension funds, us here are here selling tomatoes with kids at our backs we are starving,” A young mother told Hevoi FM news.
Another woman said: “When the government give the elderly 20kgs of meal-meal, us the young must be given 10kgs since there is an assumption that the elderly can no longer fend for themselves and us can work, The reality is that all of us are starving,” she lamented.
In most parts of Gutu district, many villages did not harvest well as too much rains affected their crops.
Also due to the devastating January disease which claimed many cattle in the district, some farmers relied much on pfumvudza program which demanded excessive use of energy on a piece of land for sustainability.
