Early girl child marriages cases are said to be on the increase at DSO mine in Mashava.
The councillor for the area, Alleta Makomeke told Hevoi FM news that it’s high time, stakeholders put their heads together and find an amicable solution on the matter.
“We are concerned that early girl child marriages are on the increase at DSO mine and reports we are hearing reveal that girls as young as 15 years old are getting married.We need to sit down as stakeholders and chart the way forward,”said Makomeke.
DSO mine ceased asbestos mining operations in 1983 and former workers, mainly migrant workers were left living in a compound in the area without any source of income.The population in the compound has risen to over 5 000.A survey carried has revealed that poverty is the main cause of the early marriages as young girls are lured by gold panners in Mashava.
