Farmers in Masvingo province say preparations for the farming season have been adversely affected by an increase in prices of farming inputs.
Some farmers in Zaka district told Hevoi FM news that some shops are selling farming inputs with forex.
“We used to buy a bag of fertilizer for $US20 now they are selling it for $US25 at the end of the day you will realize that you won’t get anything meaningful after the harvesting,”said a farmer.
Another farmer from Hwendedzo area, Mariam Shumba said:
“Some wholesalers are rejecting mobile money or even local currency preferring Us dollars.Where can we get the money during these hard times.”
Other farmers also called on government to provide them with farming inputs to cushion them from the high costs.
“We are calling on government to quickly avail us farming inputs because we cannot afford the prices being charged by the wholesalers.”
According to weather experts, the country will this season receive normal to above normal rainfall.
