The historic Great Zimbabwe Monuments became the epicenter of national pride and festivities yesterday as President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially launched the Munhumutapa Day, marking a significant moment in the nation’s cultural and historical calendar. The launch coincided with the President’s birthday celebrations, organized by the ZANU PF National Youth League, adding a festive layer to the day’s events.
Multitudes from all walks of life gathered at the revered site, which stands as a symbol of the illustrious Munhumutapa Empire, to witness the commemoration, which not only celebrated Zimbabwe’s rich past but also charted a course for its future under the theme: “Rooted in the past, growing towards a brighter future: empowering youth for nation-building and Vision 2030.”
In his keynote address, President Mnangagwa highlighted the critical role of young people in achieving Vision 2030, a blueprint aimed at transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy society within the next six years. He urged the youth to embrace opportunities in trade, entrepreneurship, and nation-building initiatives, emphasizing their role in shaping the country’s future.
“I challenge you, the young people, to continue being patriotic, loyal, disciplined, and responsible. The youth of yesteryears took arms and brought independence, freedom, democracy and territorial integrity. It is your turn to take up the challenge to ensure that Zimbabwe occupies its rightful place and that we realise greater success and prosperity,” said President Mnangagwa.
A significant highlight of the day was the launch of the Munhumutapa National Youth Housing Programme in the ancient city of Masvingo, a project designed to provide affordable housing for Zimbabweans. The initiative is also part of the Government’s broader efforts to empower the youth and address the country’s housing deficit, at the same time contributing to the national economy.
The housing initiative was met with enthusiasm, particularly by young Zimbabweans eager to benefit from the government’s efforts to improve their living conditions and enhance their participation in the national economy.
Amid the day’s historic celebrations, President Mnangagwa’s 82nd birthday was marked with a lively celebration organized by the ZANU PF National Youth League. The atmosphere was filled with song and dance as most of the people, particularly young people from across the country honored the President’s leadership and commitment to youth empowerment.
The Youth League presented President Mnangagwa with various gifts, and he was serenaded with songs and praises, cementing the bond between the nation’s youth and its leadership.
President Mnangagwa reiterated the need for Zimbabweans to embrace the spirit of trade, unity and resilience, echoing the spirit of the Munhumutapa Empire, which was known for its strong governance and expansive trade networks across Southern Africa. He drew parallels with the Munhumutapa Empire, which thrived through trade and diplomacy as he called on young entrepreneurs to seize every opportunity.
“Let us commit to upholding the great historical significance of the Munhumutapa Empire. The most powerful and prosperous kingdom in Southern Africa, and its legacy continue to inspire us. Munhumutapa, the great ruler, was a symbol of unity, peace, and resilience. Under his reign, the empire flourished in trade, culture and governance. The Munhumutapa Emperor represents more than just a historical figure, but embodies the values of nation-building, and sovereignty, wisdom, strength and leadership,” the President remarked.
