In recent years, the internet has become an indispensable tool for people searching for jobs and scholarships. However, this convenience has also created an opportunity for scammers to prey on unsuspecting individuals. Vukarhani Trust executive Director, Gerald Shirichena, says many people have fallen victim to online scams while searching for employment and educational opportunities.
“The scammers typically use social media platforms, job search websites, and email to target their victims. They often pose as representatives of reputable companies or organizations, offering fake job openings or scholarship opportunities. The scammers may request personal information, such as names, addresses, and bank account details, or demand payment for fake services or fees,” said Shirichena
Shirichena warned that these scams can have devastating consequences for the victims. “Many people have lost significant amounts of money,” he said.
“It’s essential for people to be cautious when searching for jobs and scholarships online,” added Shirichena.
Shirichena advised job and scholarship seekers to be wary of opportunities that seem too good to be true. “If a job or scholarship opportunity requires you to pay a fee or provide personal information, it’s likely a scam,” he said.
Among other efforts, Shirichena recommended that people should research the company or organization offering the opportunity to ensure its legitimacy.
“While the internet has made it easier to search for jobs and scholarships, it’s essential to be cautious and vigilant when exploring online opportunities. By being aware of the risks and taking steps to protect themselves, people can avoid falling victim to online scams and achieve their goals safely and securely,” said Shirichena
“Check for reviews, testimonials, and contact information. If the company or organisation seems suspicious, avoid it.”
